Joel S. Goldman devotes his practice to the representation of owners and operators of senior housing and care communities, including assisted living and continuing care retirement communities, as well as congregate senior communities. His practice focuses on assisting these clients with operational, licensure, regulatory, business and risk management issues. He regularly assists his clients in responding to licensing deficiencies and revocation proceedings, obtaining new licenses, dealing with disability discrimination issues under the Americans With Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Act, resolving disputes with residents and family members, and drafting residency agreements and related documents.
Joel is very active in industry associations. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the California Assisted Living Association since the organizations inception in 1994, and he served as CALA's President in 1997. He has been a frequent speaker at conferences around the country including those sponsored by the American Health Lawyer's Association, Assisted Living Federation of America, American Seniors Housing Association, National Association for Senior Living Industry Executives, American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, American College of Healthcare Administrators, the Erickson School at the University of Maryland, the Crocker Symposium, Healthcare Financial Management Association, and the University of Santa Clara School of Law. Joel's practical approach to issues and vast experience with senior care communities also make him a popular presenter at in-house risk management training programs for multi-facility providers. In addition, he has written numerous articles on senior care community issues for various publications in addition to authoring regular legal updates for the CALA Bulletin. Joel is licensed to practice law in California.
